Appreciation Luncheon for Homeless Count and Survey Volunteers
On Friday, April 16 an Appreciation Luncheon was given in honor of the more than 60 student volunteers from Fuller Seminary that helped complete the City of Pasadena 2010 Homeless Count and Homeless Survey. Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard presented a Certificate of Recognition to Fuller Seminary President Richard Mouw that expressed the City's appreciation of the student's efforts. County of Ventura 2010 Homeless Count Released!
The total number of homeless adults and children counted was 1,815 which represents a
decrease of 17% when compared to the number of homeless persons counted last year.
Urban Initiatives served as consultant to the Ventura Homeless and Housing Coalition for the homeless count. The report is available on www.urban-initiatives.org and www.vchhc.org.
County of Ventura 2010 Homeless Survey
Urban Initiatives is also serving as consultant to the Ventura Homeless and Housing Coalition concerning the administration of the more than 100 question survey. Results will be available in June.
Los Angeles Police Department Workshop on Homelessness and Mental Illness Sofia Herrera, PhD and Joe Colletti, PhD participated in the workshop on March 23 that provided training and education concerning law enforcement interactions with the homeless mentally ill. Other Activities in Progress:
Tamales de la Paz (Peace) is coordinated by Urban Initiatives in partnership with Los Angeles Councilmember Ed P. Reyes, - District 1 and other community organizations. It is an annual event of community solidarity that helps bring peace and healing to past events and outstanding issues that have troubled the MacArthur Park neighborhood. Such events and issues include the May 1, 2007 confrontation between rally and march supporters, media, police, and others in the park. The event will take place on Friday, April 30 beginning at 5:00 pm at Mama's Hot Tamales Café. Click here to view last year's event.
"Building Faith Among the Vulnerable: Preventing Foreclosure Rescue and Loan Modifications Scams" is a workshop for faith and community leaders that Urban Initiatives is co-sponsoring with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Division of Supervision and Consumer Protection. More details will appear in next month's newsletter.
Human Trafficking in Southern California is a joint effort with Oasis USA, the Western U.S. Office for Stop the Traffik and the Office for Urban Initiatives at Fuller Theological Seminary. Through this partnership, a survey will be completed that will describe the needs of women and men who have been trafficked into Southern California from Asian countries. Homeless Assessment for Simi Valley, CA is a joint effort with the City of Simi Valley which will note gaps in homeless services and provide recommendations to fill such gaps.
